The Reading Difficulty Challenge

The Reading Difficulty Challenge
By: Marie Dunleavy

There is a wide range of children experiencing reading difficulties. However, there is also a big chance that these children overcome their reading difficulties and be able to develop their full reading potential. Teachers and parents must be able to identify the reading difficulty of children to be able to address their needs immediately.

Early Diagnosis For Immediate Remedy

To be able to help the children overcome their reading difficulties, you must first be able to determine whether the children are really struggling with reading. If they are, you should be able to identify in what areas of reading they are struggling. Early diagnosis is necessary for early treatment or remediation.

Parents and teachers should be aware of how the children perform in terms of reading. Once you suspect that a child is struggling with some areas of reading, you should act on it immediately. There is no need for a formal diagnose that the child is experiencing reading or learning disability before you start giving the child special attention, guidance and instruction.

It is also necessary that you identify the source of the child’s reading difficulty. This will help you devise teaching strategies that will help the child develop better reading skills. Knowing the source of the struggle will give you ideas on how to specifically target the difficulty. If the child struggles with reading because of poor reading instruction, then you must improve your reading instruction.

Identifying Reading Struggles

Psychology tells us of individual differences. The same theory can be applied to reading. Not all students will develop reading skills at the same time. Although it is true, there is still a standard for reading that you should look into. For instance, all third grade students should at least be able to read fluently. Any far discrepancy on this can be well assumed to be a case of reading struggle and should be treated specially.

There are some students who are really prone to difficulties especially in reading. Teachers and parents should try to identify whether their children or students have this tendency so that early diagnosis and treatment can be made.

Parents And Teachers Dealing With Struggling Readers

Children with reading difficulties must be guided accordingly for them to develop better reading skills. What the children need are good reading instruction, interesting and simple reading resources and proper guidance from the teachers and parents.
